The PHCC Flow Expo is the largest trade show in the Western United States dedicated to plumbing, heating, cooling and related industries. The Flow Expo is where thousands of professionals have been gathering for over 40 years to discover and discuss the newest in technologies, trends, services and code requirements. With over 136 exhibitors representing over 400 brands it has grown to become one of the biggest “MUST” attend events of the year for the PHC trades. This year, the expo was held at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.
Small business powerhouse, successful franchisor, author and PHC News columnist Ellen Rohr gave the headline presentation: “How to build a Rockin’ Team.” It was a full house, and Rohr delivered an interactive seminar. The goal of the presentation was to help solve the “I can’t find good people!” problem.
Rohr discussed some of the things to do and NOT do when new attracting new hires. She also asked the question: “what makes good people leave?” Other topics included:
• How to create a great game … and get your team to play.
• Reward the right stuff. Better ways to pay and reward the behaviors that drive your success.
• Why their ATTITUDE is none of your business!
Rohr offered some tough love and solid tips for growing a team.
“So often contractors complain about not being able to find great team members. The problem isn’t them. The solution lies within you,” Rohr says. “Be willing to hire green techs and train them. Yep, it takes some time, energy and resources. However, it’s the only sure-fire way to grow your team. You can supplement your in-house training with offerings from the PHCC. Manufacturers offer solid training, too. Stitch these offerings into your training program.”
