Toto Ltd., unveiled its Flotation Tub designed to bring about “ultimate relaxation” by inducing relaxed brain waves. The tub, inspired by flotation therapy, was on display at ISH 2017 in Frankfurt, Germany.
Unlike conventional bathtubs, the Flotation Tub features a cradle-like design that positions bathers halfway between floating and lying down. The bathtub measures more than 6 ½-feet long so bathers can stretch out, and features an adjustable pillow and water jets offering massage functions.
The tub is intended to encourage low-frequency brain waves, which are associated with deep relaxation and sleep. Toto's researchers said they came up with the idea when they noted that most of their ideas came to them while they were taking baths.
The tub, which hasn’t yet been priced, will be aimed primarily at high-income consumers overseas in Europe, the U.S., the Middle East and China, a first for the Japanese company that’s marking its 100th anniversary this year.
"Until now, our thinking has been to come up with ways to sell to the overseas markets products that were developed for Japan. But now, we’re trying to develop products aimed at overseas markets," Toto president Madoka Kitamura told the Bloomberg news organization.
