Q: Can you describe any new developments in boiler technology that your company made recently?
A: Laars has invested heavily in R&D and advanced manufacturing techniques to release our unique, American-designed products and make condensing heat exchangers and boiler platforms that meet the requirements of today’s specifying engineers, contractors and building owners. These investments include a new state-of-the-art R&D laboratory with 15 test stations, upgraded robotic welding and machining cells, fiberoptic laser-cutting equipment, and more. We’ve also been busy redesigning many of our control platforms to include intuitive icon driven menu structures to increase the ease of use and setup of our boilers.
Q: What customer feedback have you received about boilers and/or the boiler market?
A: Engineers, contractors and building owners are taking a broader systems approach that better integrates boilers with a building’s heating distribution system. A key attribute to this is tying boiler modulation rates together with outdoor reset measurements and variable speed pumping to optimize total installed efficiency. In response to this need, we developed the proprietary VARI-PRIME control system that seamlessly matches the firing rate of a Laars boiler to its variable speed boiler pump’s flow. The unique VARI-PRIME control functionality balances combustion, air flow and water flow to optimize boiler efficiency per indoor and outdoor conditions. The result is a large reduction in the boiler’s gas and electrical energy consumption and therefore a smaller bill for the building owner. VARI-PRIME is currently available on MagnaTherm and NeoTherm lines, but will soon be available on many of our residential condensing boilers.
Q: What is your outlook or forecast for the boiler market?
A: We’re seeing increased activity in both the commercial and residential markets, particularly regarding our high-efficiency condensing product lines, and we expect this to continue through 2016. However, interest continues in our near condensing, fan-assisted commercial products. Interest in the near condensing category is due to the overall value offered in both installation and operational costs, especially when factoring in low natural gas prices and the reduced availability of high efficiency rebates. Value engineered “hybrid systems” and high efficiency boilers backed up by near condensing boilers are being used more often in the commercial marketplace. The benefit of such a system is that the initial installation cost is lower than a full condensing bank of boilers while maintaining the desired low cost of operation via condensing boilers for the vast majority of heating days.
BRADFORD WHITE
The high-efficiency Brute LX, is a boiler and tankless water heater combined into one space-saving unit. Energy Star-qualified and available in 10 models from 50 to 220 MBH, the high output of the Brute LX provides reliable home heating and domestic hot water for most homes, while its energy-efficient and low-emission performance reduces heating bills and is better for the environment.
The 95 percent AFUE Brute LX is fully modulating, so it automatically adjusts how much fuel is used to match heat demand, from 20 to 100 percent of full power. Q: Can you describe any new developments in boiler technology that your company made recently?
A: Controls are so powerful today that proper setup with some can be a challenge, and with that in mind, Bradford White engineers set out to make the next generation of boiler controls very easy to use. The Brute LX control interface, for example, utilizes easy-to-use-and-understand icons that clearly describe functions and status. Intuitive menu structures that were built from an installer’s perspective group common settings together to reduce jumping from menu to menu. For multiple boiler installations, an “auto-configure” feature senses the installation type and number of boilers, then automatically configures the lead/lag controls with no programming needed by the contractor. Also included is an “auto-handshake” feature that automatically populates parameter sets when a control board or display is replaced. These features and more make for a much improved user experience compared to standard control platforms.
Q: What customer feedback have you received about boilers and/or the boiler market?
A: Both residential and commercial installers continue to push for higher efficiency and performance and more compact configurations for tighter mechanical spaces. It’s less of an issue for replacement products, but in new space designs, every square inch matters. Also, demand is growing for more intelligent controls with connectivity features. From the commercial perspective, building managers want easy integration into building management systems that can be supported on-site or remotely. In a similar way, homeowners are also looking to integrate as many of their appliances as possible into their home networks for operation from mobile devices.
Q: What is your outlook or forecast for the boiler market?
A: As boiler performance improves, consumers will want to replace existing systems as a means to reduce energy costs. Also, many federal and state institutions continue to issue mandates in terms of energy use and costs; the result is that facility managers see the need to replace heating and hot water systems to meet the new business standards. Lastly, as was the case with water heaters (NAECA 2015), evolving federal regulations will continue to drive replacements and heating system updates.

Q: Can you describe any new developments in boiler technology that your company made recently?
A: The U.S. Department of Energy has made sweeping regulatory changes in recent years affecting appliances that consume a lot of energy in a home, like HVAC equipment and water heaters, which we manufacture. At the same time, end users are also demanding more energy-efficient systems. Along with fuel energy efficiency we are also seeing a demand for boilers to operate at lower water flow rates, which now means a greater turndown ability is demanded by the system design. The lower flow rates are being driven by energy-efficient pump systems using variable speed technology to match the system load requirements.
Q: What customer feedback have you received about boilers and/or the boiler market?
A: More and more customers are turning to higher efficiency residential appliances. We have adjusted our product offering over the years to now include stainless steel condensing high efficiency boilers. With that in mind, we are now fully focused on continuing to develop new and progressive high efficiency products. Each new boiler we design brings unique design and application challenges. We learn so much from each project and how it performs in real life which leads us to a more robust and mature design on each new product. The learning never stops, and the technology keeps improving.
Q: What is your outlook or forecast for the boiler market?
A: Raypak’s engineers and product development team accepted the high efficiency challenge as a great opportunity to expand and advance our heater design capabilities. We took our industry-leading copper technology and leveraged that design strength moving forward with the use of more exotic materials to help achieve higher efficiency while still making a robust heater. But what many people don’t realize is how much of a challenge there is in keeping up with Building Management System (BMS) integration. As the move toward green buildings increases, not only are the boilers becoming more fuel-efficient, but so are the computer systems that coordinate and control all of the energy driven devices in a building. Being able to seamlessly integrate with multiple brands of BMS is becoming the norm by today’s standards. Raypak has worked tirelessly to bring to market our Versa IC control that works with many popular BMS and also offers multi-unit connectivity.
The boiler market today is not the one it was 20 years ago. Boilers have become much more energy-efficient and integrated into on-site BMS. A boiler technician today needs to keep up with manufacturer training in order to stay relative to the products. Raypak provides excellent boiler training throughout the year on all its boilers. Although we try to make our boilers as plug-and-play as possible, having the right training today goes a long way to understanding today’s boiler technology.
The way the boiler market is heading, companies are working harder to be able to offer building owners and facility managers more rebates and government incentives. Companies are realizing the importance of energy-saving appliances because it reduces overhead cost. High efficiency products are not just another offering in a manufacturer’s line-up; they are becoming the backbone of their product focus. These products are becoming a must-have appliance in new construction as well as seriously looked at in the replacement market.

Combined with our thermal purge, the Accel CS delivers on exceptional performance without complexity.
Q: What customer feedback have you received about boilers and/or the boiler market?
A: We often hear that all of our designs, including our stainless steel Accel CS modulating condensing boiler with wide open water and flue passes, have simple controls with easy diagnostics, installation and setup. Many installation companies, technicians and consumers who have lived with condensing boiler technology over the past two decades have seen frequent changes in other boiler designs along with a wide array of controls and related installation complexity. Often, these other boiler models have very tight flue passes and water passes which may be followed by less than anticipated longevity, more installation complexity and higher service costs.
Q: What is your outlook or forecast for the boiler market?
A: Consumers have adjusted their response to changes in fuel prices, which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in oil-to-gas boiler conversions. In many markets well-served with boiler technology, natural gas, propane and oil, fuel prices have become very competitive. We see this supporting growth as another strong incentive for consumers to purchase our high-efficiency System 2000 and 90-plus Resolute heating systems, which can be converted between oil and gas fuels with a burner change.

Q: Can you describe any new developments in boiler technology that your company made recently?
A: The new Buderus SSB Series of condensing stainless steel boilers was specifically tailored by Bosch to provide all the same features and benefits from a small residential boiler through a large commercial cascade application. A single platform design for all Buderus SSBs makes installation and commissioning easy, regardless of the output required.
With an efficiency of 96 percent, the Buderus SSB is equipped with standard features that include up to 10:1 turndown ratio; on-board control that includes weather compensation; mod-bus connectivity; a two-wire cascades link; practical control solutions for any application; push terminal wiring; and a host of venting options.
The wall-mounted Greenstar boiler from Bosch Thermotechnology Corp. is available in a floor-standing (FS) version for all eight models. Greenstar FS models are ideal for use in applications where wall-mounting options are not feasible or a floor-standing unit is preferred.
Along with the Greenstar FS boiler, Bosch introduced a new system control (NSC) package of intelligent modules designed to control multiple zones and reduce zone “on-off” boiler cycling for increased indoor comfort and greater energy savings. NSC control modules are similar to wiring and installation of a basic on-off system but designed to communicate a reduced target supply temperature, thereby increasing comfort and decreasing energy consumption.
With Wi-Fi capabilities being the current demand trend, Bosch has also introduced its Bosch Control Smart Thermostat. The Bosch Control Smart Thermostat uses a home Wi-Fi connection to allow heating and domestic hot water to be monitored and adjusted from any compatible smartphone or tablet. The device is a programmable room thermostat with integrated temperature sensor and boiler controller in one simple-to -se device, enabling the user to monitor and control boiler function remotely using a mobile device or tablet.
The sleek, black glass, wall-mounted rectangular panel is simple to install and connects to any Bosch or Buderus wall-mounted condensing gas boiler using standard two-wired connections.
Q: What customer feedback have you received about boilers and/or the boiler market?
A: Contractors have been telling us they want a direct replacement high efficiency condensing gas boiler with flexible venting options. The new Greenstar FS meets that demand and can be vented using polypropylene (PP), flexible PP chimney liner, and concentric PP kit, PVC or CPVC.
Q: What is your outlook or forecast for the boiler market?
A: Demand for standard efficiency or oil-fired equipment is stagnating. The double-digit growth we’re experiencing is for high efficiency gas-fired equipment. Consumers are also asking for communicating controls to allow monitoring and controlling their heating/hot water using a mobile device or tablet. There is also a strong trend to cascading wall-mounted boilers for use in larger homes and light-commercial spaces.
We see more of a continuing shift to higher energy-saving boilers like condensing models and combi boilers. A combi boiler saves time on installation and reduces the need for more equipment to produce space heat and domestic hot water. With our combi boilers and condensing tankless water heater offerings, Bosch is well positioned within the 90-plus percent efficiency side. We also realize that where utility and other rebates don’t exist, the cast iron replacement 80-plus efficiency product offerings will continue to sell, especially for older homes with chimneys and where direct-vent applications may not be possible or feasible. Otherwise more customers are moving to modulating condensing boilers for their energy saving efficiency.

Q: Can you describe any new developments in boiler technology that your company made recently?
A: We saw an increase in applications utilizing indirect water heaters with larger heating coils, and high-efficiency condensing boilers. In our 60, 80 and 115 gallon units, we offered heat exchanger coils that will take boiler outputs in the 110k to 140 K range for common residential size boilers. We also offer higher output coils that will take boiler outputs in the 200k to 240k range. All of the coils are designed in a counter flow configuration to lower boiler return temperatures. A trend that we have seen over the last few years is an increase in the usage of the high output coils with lower input boilers. Using a high output indirect heat exchanger with a lower input boiler allows the boiler to run at lower supply and return temperatures and increases the boiler efficiency while running on the water heating mode. About half of our high output units are used because the installation needs the 200k input in the water heating mode, and about half of the high output units are used to increase boiler efficiency.
Q: What customer feedback have you received about boilers and/or the boiler market?
A: Our unique hot water storage tank or “booster tank” units include dedicated supply and return dip tubes for improved temperature control while assuring that the heat source is hydraulically decoupled from the cold and hot connections and flow variations. Some installers have used the storage tanks, with four 1-inch NPT connections as buffer tanks in water-to-water heat pump applications. All indirect water heaters and storage tanks are shipped with a standard Honeywell 4080B control rather than a special OEM control. These controls are readily available locally.
Our Hydronic Buffer Tanks are gaining wide acceptance as the ideal choice for assuring optimum system efficiency in water-to-water heat pumps, chillers and low mass boilers. These light-weight, high-quality units are available in 40, 60, 80 and 115 gallon sizes. We offer connection options of 1-1/4, 1-1/2 or 2 inch NPT to match system requirements. Optional single and dual coil heat exchangers, multiple sensing wells and custom tapping configurations are available to meet the requirements of today’s complex systems. We also offer a 22-gallon buffer tank with either two or four 1-1/4 inch connections. The four-port unit is a good choice to reduce the cycling of low mass mod-con boilers and to hydraulically decouple the boiler from the distribution system at the same time.
Q: What is your outlook or forecast for the boiler market?
A: We expect continued strong growth in our core indirect water heater and hot water storage tank business as more installers are exposed to our installer friendly design features that include all top-mount connections. Installation material costs reductions of $65 to $100 or more, and labor cost reductions of 25 percent or more are very common in comparing the Heat-Flo units to the typical units with connections on the side, and T+P valves and drain valves that have to be installed with extra do-it-yourself parts. With the increasing market share being taken by high-efficiency wall-hung condensing boilers our Lowboy units with all top connections can be installed under the mod-con boilers in some installations, saving valuable floor space.
We continue to expand our distribution in the U.S. and Canada. We look forward to providing good jobs to our workers at our expanded manufacturing facility by manufacturing high-quality, innovative water heating and hydronic products.
