UMC, a premier full-service design-build mechanical contractor known for its commitment to customer satisfaction and employee excellence, is beginning an exciting new chapter as they announce the move of their headquarters to a vibrant, forward-thinking space, signaling a significant milestone in the company’s century-long journey of growth and momentum.
The former Mukilteo, Washington headquarters, which had served as the heart of the company since 2001, transferred to new ownership, making way for UMC's transition to their new home on the fourth floor of the Redstone Corporate Center I in Lynnwood, Washington. This relocation endeavor involved creating a visionary office space designed by JPC Architects, with a mission to showcase how readily available construction materials and sustainable processes can result in an exceptionally efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective tenant improvement construction project.
In 2022, the company moved its entire suite of prefabrication shops and manufacturing operations under one roof at its new, 95,000 square foot facility near the Boeing plant in Everett. This consolidation also included warehouse operations, shipping and receiving, virtual construction services, the purchasing department, and certain administrative offices. UMC’s operations have also been enhanced by the additions of Tacoma and Redmond office locations that help UMC serve their clients in those areas.
“We could have built a new manufacturing building and a new office building,” said Steve Brooks, president. “However, the most sustainable buildings are the ones that are already built and finding these two facilities already in existence allowed us to reuse a bulk of materials and tweak them to suit our new vision. In the Lynnwood office, we salvaged and reused all the doors and much of the ceiling system. We worked with our vendors to find new office furniture that we could repurpose for our suite.
“This space was conceived with the goal of bringing our teams together in a vibrant new space to continue to spur creativity in solving our clients’ and communities' challenges,” Brooks went on to say. “With the location being close to new mass transit and abundant community, shopping, and dining amenities, it promotes our participating in the community and supporting the economy in the area we work in.”
At the core of UMC's philosophy lies a strong commitment to their people. Every decision made is rooted in the belief that employees are their most valuable asset. With the move to the new Lynnwood headquarters, UMC reaffirms this commitment by providing employees with a diverse range of workspaces tailored to their unique needs, regardless of their role within the organization. The new headquarters environment, streaming with outdoor light and Cascade mountain views, includes private offices, collaborative workspaces, hoteling stations, dedicated phone and Zoom rooms, numerous conference rooms with state-of-the-are audiovisual systems, a mother’s room, underground parking, easy access to public transportation and Lynnwood Link Light Rail, close proximity to shopping and dining options, and even creative brainstorming space around the cornhole boards—making it a true home for every team member.
UMC’s new headquarters was carefully designed to foster a warm and welcoming atmosphere reflecting the very essence of UMC's culture. It is where many new recruits will take their first steps on their UMC journey, where employees can connect with colleagues both in-office and remotely, and where clients can immerse themselves in the spirit of innovation and collaboration that defines UMC.
“As we embark on this new chapter, UMC's leadership is immensely proud to guide a team that continually pushes the boundaries of excellence,” Brooks said. “With optimism and excitement, we look forward to the limitless possibilities the future holds.”
