John Joseph Mathews of Lakeside Supply Co. has passed away at age 56.
John was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 2, 1966. He was a proud alumnus of St. Ignatius High School and attended Ohio University before marrying his high school sweetheart, Dianne Michelle Ellendt. They soon welcomed four beautiful children, and although he was young, he knew it was his most important role and became the model father. John doted on his family and they were the most important part of his life. He started early in the family business at Lakeside Supply Co. and worked his way up. As vice president, he was especially proud of the ties he built in the Cleveland community and continuing the family business into the next generation.
A loyal fan of Cleveland sports, John watched the games with enthusiasm. In addition to all of his accomplishments, he was known for his innate talent to fix anything and everything. Happiest spending his summers at the family farm, Kenwood was where he grew up, golfed, took the kids on tractor rides, and cared for the property. He was the most beloved father, grandfather, son, and brother who never failed to make his family smile with his big grin, easygoing nature, generous heart, and fun-loving spirit.
Dear son of Mary Lou Mathews (Davis) and the late Laurence Mathews, John is survived by his loving children Ericka Ghazoul (née Mathews), Jacqueline Johnston (née Mathews), Nicole Mathews, and John J. Mathews, II, and his close friends and sons-in-law Brian Ghazoul and Jeffrey Johnston, as well as his lovely daughter-in-law, Meridith Viguet Mathews. Although he cherished his children, his greatest joy was being a grandfather to Robert Ghazoul, Mary Johnston, Violet Johnston, Luke Ghazoul, Matilda Johnston, and Thea Ghazoul.
Dearest brother of Christine Long (David), Mary Kay Doyle (Bernie), Therese Leisinger, (Jeff), Judith Nash (Gary deceased), James Mathews (deceased), Laurence Mathews (Patricia), Kenneth Mathews (Eileen), Ann Marie O'Malley (dearest brother-in-law Bryan), and Mark Mathews. Beloved best friend of Dianne Ellendt Mathews. Friend, uncle, and cousin to too many to count-including his best friend, Joseph Charvat-he was beloved by all who were fortunate enough to know him. John passed away on October 17, 2022.
A funeral mass was held at St. Bernadette Church, 2256 Clague Rd., Westlake, Ohio, on Saturday Oct. 22, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. Interment private.
