Insurance companies paid out more than $4 billion in claims for frozen, burst pipes in the past decade, according to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety. Leaving a hose, splitter, nozzle or timer attached to the house during the winter creates the opportunity for the water to freeze in the line, thus resulting in a burst pipe and water damage. More than 250 gallons of water per day can flow out from just a one-eighth inch rupture.
