Basco Shower Enclosures’ founder, G. William (Bill) Rohde, has passed away peacefully on August 7th at the age of 88.
The Basco Company was launched on August 1, 1955. In 1963, Basco was the first shower door company to use safety tempered glass on all its doors and enclosures – which by law is the primary type of glass used for bathroom shower door applications today. In 1970, Rhode’s help Basco develop the first complete line of frameless shower enclosures.
Rhode held the position of President for 38 years, and then took on the role of CEO and Chairman of the Board until his “unofficial” retirement in 2006 -- unofficial because Mr. Rohde still came to work almost every day until 2016. He also served on other boards throughout his career.
Currently, Rohde’s son, George W. Rohde is the President and CEO of the company.
“Mr. Rohde was a wonderful relationship builder. From the first time you met him, you trusted him and wanted to do business with him. He was always interested in your success and made you feel the Basco family was there to support your business growth,” the company said in a statement following Bill’s passing.
“With Mr. Rohde’s tireless work ethic and vision, Basco remains an industry pioneer and diverse force in the shower door market. The company employs over 300 associates and operates three locations throughout the U.S., including its newest tempering and distribution facility located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.”
