Passionate about learning all he can, maintaining the utmost in professionalism, and leading by example, Tyler Paul received the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association’s (PHCC) 2023 HVAC Apprentice of the Year Award. PHCC Corporate Partner Rheem sponsored the award, which was presented Oct. 27 during PHCCCONNECT2023 in Cleveland, Ohio.
As was announced during the awards ceremony, Paul – who completed his HVAC apprenticeship through the PHCC Academy in May and works for BION Inc. in Prince William County, Virginia – “takes his work and learning of our trade seriously. His job is not just a job to him, but a career. It is obvious that making a positive difference to the facilities and crews that he supports is important to him.”
In Paul’s words, he entered the profession because he enjoys working with his hands, and that there is always something to learn or get better at so he can do more to help his customers.
Paul completed both his plumbing and HVAC apprenticeships working at BION and has become a Train the Trainer for PHCC of Virginia with certifications in multiple disciplines. He is familiar with plumbing, HVAC, and medical gas code, many times teaching more experienced workers. As a respected foreman, BION superintendents, crews, subcontractors, and general contractors rely on Paul’s knowledge. “Tyler consistently demonstrates a strong desire to always do things correctly and considers the ‘why’ of how the systems we install will be used,” reads the nomination on his behalf. “He works days, nights, weekends and is always there to mentor younger staff.”
“While [Paul] looked so young, we realized right away that he was mature and intelligent beyond his years," added Russell Ryan, a foreman at BION. "From then on, we realized this kid really knew what he was talking about, and we all needed to take time to listen to Tyler Paul, as he is crazy book and field smart.”
Others from BION add that he is “second to none” and most deserving on this honor.
