One of southeast Michigan's longest-standing plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical companies has expanded into a new office and warehouse building, in southwest Oakland County.
The Novi-based company, Dan Wood Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Electrical, moved to its new facility at 40950 Grand River Avenue, in early spring. The relocation has expanded both the office, warehouse and training space to help the company serve thousands of customers across Metro Detroit.
A second-generation family business, the Novi firm is currently owned and operated by Al Wood, son of the company's founder, Dan Wood, who opened his first shop in 1957.
Al's grandfather, Edwin Wood, was one of the first master plumbers in Detroit, in the early 1900s. Edwin's son, Dan Wood, apprenticed under him until opening his own business on Vernor Highway, in Detroit, with his son Al joining the operation in 1974.
As a longtime Detroit business, Dan Wood expanded into the Novi community in 1984. He then retired in 1997.
Besides Al Wood, other members of the Wood family continue to work in the business, including Al's wife Denise, his daughter Julie and youngest son Jack. Their eldest son, Jacob, returned home from New York during the COVID pandemic and assisted the family business during a time of need.
The firm employs more than 40 people, deploys 25-plus vehicles, and provides a wide array of plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical services for both individuals and companies.
"We are a service-oriented business, but we also complete installation work on products like water heaters, furnaces and more," Al Wood said. "We are also a Carrier Factory Authorized dealer."
The company's customer list includes both residential and commercial organizations. During the COVID pandemic, the company closely followed all state health guidelines while continuing to serve its customers.
"My dad started the business out of the garage at his house," said Al Wood, a resident of Farmington Hills. "Today, we are thrilled to be able to expand and offer even greater service from our new facility."
