Colorado Utility Removes Water Valve – Still Working After 129 Years​

Workers from Colorado Springs Utility removed a 129-year-old cast-iron water valve installed in 1888 and still working. And it’s not even the oldest valve in service. According the officials, the city’s first valve was installed also in 1998 to provide service to the Antlers Hotel.

The removal was part of the Colorado city’s efforts to retrofit its aging water mains.

Utilities engineer support coordinator Michael Lovato added that there are 90 valves close to the age of the one dug up Monday.

The valve will be put on display at the Colorado Springs Utilities Leon Young Service Center alongside other historical items that represent the city's early days, including valve covers, manhole rings, electrical wiring and Christmas lights.
