Flint mayor wants to begin pipe replacement next month

Flint Mayor Karen Weaver outlined on Feb. 9 an estimated $55-million public works project expected to begin within a month to remove Flint's lead-contaminated pipes from the water distribution system.

That dollar figure is what her public works staff and experts from the Lansing Board of Water and Light came up with. Lansing, Mich. pioneered lead pipe removal, the mayor said, adding that it has removed 13,500 lead pipes in Michigan's state capital over 12 years.
