Louisville Water Uncovers Ancient Check Valve Dating Back to the 1870s

Louisville Water crews uncovered a check valve dating back to the 1870s during a main replacement project. According to a news release published by the organization, the cast-iron check valve weighs around 15,000 pounds and stands seven feet tall and seven feet wide.

The release stated Louisville Water President and CEO John L. Huber "suspects the check valve was installed during the construction of Central State Hospital on LaGrange Road in East Louisville, just outside Anchorage." It was removed in May 2022 for the new water main, which Louisville Water said "provides additional supply lines and more flexibility to move and reroute water to customers."
